Being the inhabitants of the Earth, indeed, we have certain responsibilities towards it, and environmental protection is one of them. After the industrial revolution and mechanization of the world, industrial emissions, which is a human activity, have contributed most to the environmental degradation.

To solve this problem, Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is the best solution that uses waste heat from boilers, an important component of industries, to produce electrical energy output, which has motivated us to work on this project.

The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is named for its use of an organic, high molecular mass fluid with a liquid-vapor phase change, or boiling point, occurring at a lower temperature than the water-steam phase change.

Organic fluids lead to:
Higher turbine efficiencies
Low maintenance operation.
Good part load behavior.

Small Scale ORC power plant

ADVANTAGES:
Utilization of wasted energy
Increased power and efficiency.
Good Financial Return.
Problem Statement:

Our planet is dearest to us, as it is the only planet able to accommodate human life. But our actions in response, towards the Earth, have not been great. The emission of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, and other poisonous gases have greatly damaged our environment, and if this continues at the same pace, doom’s day would not be far enough. Burning of fossil fuels has contributed a great chunk to this destruction because of which conventional power plants are being replaced by power plants operating on Organic Rankine CyclWorld energy consumption is increasing at a rapid pace and we can not rely solely on fossil fuels. Clean and alternative energy sources have to be figured out and Organic Rankine Cycle is one of them.

Waste Heat is a major cause of global warming and the greenhouse effect

During my bachelor’s, I always enjoyed the subjects of Energy and Environment. Luckily, in my final year project, I get this technology to be work upon in which he had to “Design a plant based on ORC “. Their I identified what effects the carbon emissions and fossil fuels have in our environment and we must cater these in order to make our beloved earth a better and healthier place.

Ozone depletion, gradual thinning of Earth’s ozone layer in the upper atmosphere caused by the release of chemical compounds containing gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry and other human activities. Global warming is the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect. This effect is caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other gases in the air, many of them released by human activity.

It has been an immense learning procedure, the whole research process was exhausting but we have been able to select a suitable working fluid for the exhaust (waste) gases.

Finally, we have been able to design it but the fabrication is delayed due to the current corona situation, we were in negotiations with a firm had several meetings with them. They were ready to invest but the current corona situation has held them back. We will approach them in September and hope to fabricate a prototype for them saving 20% of their waste energy which will lead to having a faster capital recovery and a lot of annual energy saving without impacting the earth.

Indeed, the world is battling a severe energy crisis, and the actions required to cope with that crises must be taken immediately. One of those actions is the energy conservation through the installation of Organic Rankine Cycle. If we focus on such projects, it can not only fulfill our extensive energy requirements but can also make the populace sincere towards the nature. Which is why, the Industries must install Organic Rankine Cycle for the better future of our planet.
